Building a Report Model from a Cube

One of the key elements in SQL Server 2005 is the Report Model. This is a meta layer that can be used to insulate the end user from the complexity of the data source. In my opinion it is massively under utilized. As far as I can tell it is only used in the Report Builder Click Once application Reporting Services can deploy.

It is my hope that an excel addin is provided and that the next version of Office will make use of it. At the moment even the Business Scorecard Manager cannot use it!

The only answer I have been given is that Excel and BSM are designed to work against a Cube. That is all well and good but most clients dont have and dont want to pay for cubes. They have their transactional database and want to be able to get data from it.

It is for this reason that Touchstone have success selling the Systems Union Vision Suite. It allows users to access their data in a simplified manner into Excel and other tools..

Anyway enough of the rant. The reason for the post was that Sam has posted on how to create a reporting services model from an Analysis Services Cube
