Copy and Paste SQL Server 2005 to Excel

We have just found a really strange effect.

In SQL Server 2005 we ran this query to get a quick dump of cost centres for another application:

Select Distinct CostCentreCode,CostCentreName

fromdbo.DimAccounts

The results were reported as 5021 rows. I Selected all these copied them and pasted them into Excel.

Imagine our surprise when in Excel only 3673 rows appeared!

I have no idea why. I can only think it may be a limit in the clipboard buffer.

This is potentially a vey dangerous situation. If it was not for my collegues sharp eyes it could have gone undetected till go live.

Does anyone have any ideas why this happens?
